Folksy Scouts strives to lead and teach all children practical and nurturing skills so that they may grow into self-sustaining, empowered individuals with an appreciation for nature & natural materials, sustainability with our earth, and thoughtful relationship building. Our troops work with children age 4 - 10 and our Junior Leadership Program is for ages 11 - 17.
We have such an amazing lineup of gatherings focused around activities that create buildable skills year after year. You'll notice we now have troops with required age ranges-- this is to help us truly tailor the Folksy Scouts experience with the developmental readiness of the child. Our older children will be diving into a deeper focus with knife skills, with designated carving time each and every meeting. Our younger introductory scouts will enjoy lesson plans that peacefully introduce skills and the importance of community building and scouting. The troops are mixed age, with an intentional age of focus.
Troop gatherings follow the Folksy Scouts curriculum based on the Folksy Scouts foundations and seasonal rhythms. Throughout the year, scouts complete foundational activities. Once all activities in a particular foundation are completed, the scout is considered to have “earned” the patch for that foundation, which will be awarded at our end of year patching celebration. Throughout the year, scouts will be encouraged to participate in fundraising activities to offset the costs of patches, camping trip, and earn their Entrepreneurship patch.
Registration - $75 (non refundable, includes uniform t-shirt, foundations journal, supplies)
Monthly Subscription - $60/month (October-June)
Scouts Knife - $35 (one-time purchase)
Kindness to you, Kindness to me
We look and we find what we're longing to see
With hands and our heart, we're learning to be
What the world needs from you and the world needs from me.
I'll build a skill that is helpful to me
and help you become the best you can be.
Our seasons guide us as we grow and learn
and I feel accomplished by the patches I earn.
I am joy, I am peace, I am capable and strong
in all that I do, even singing a song.
We celebrate all who join us each day
We're inclusive and kind, we give everyone a say.
Guided by curiosity, wonder and beauty
I promise to uphold my true Folksy duties.
Here are our core principles. We guide all of our activities and programming around one of these ten foundations.
Developing fine motor skills is so important and useful for little hands (and big hands too!) but what's really special about handwork is the connection it creates.
We'll be learning the basics of thrifting and shopping secondhand to acquire things we need or desire, how to mend clothing, and to upcycle goods that need repair.
Having an awareness and dedication to where our food comes from, how it grows, and how to cultivate it for our own health and wellbeing in a sustainable way for our earth.
We want to demonstrate how Mother Nature is a gift and giver, and how to care for and appreciate her.
Now more than ever, innovation and creative thinking sets you apart from the crowd. Being able to gather all of your skills to be both thrifty and resourceful can create real success.
Knowing the basic skills for self-sustainability such as fire building, pitching a camp, cooking simple meals, tying knots, helping assist with first aid, and reading a map.
We will learn skills in intuitive cooking and recipe following. We'll also take a dive into some fermentation basics like sourdough and kombucha.
How to take what we have and make it into something that can serve us. How to create a micro-environment of things that not only make us happy but help us thrive.
Celebrations feel natural throughout the year, and bring us a sense of rhythm, excitement, and drive.
Morals and values are part of the Folksy Scout code, including the beliefs that kindness comes first and that people are important and deserving of love and respect.
