The Beauty of Birdsong: An Introduction to Nature Journaling
Best for ages 6+Up to 20 participants 60 minutes $200

Folksy House leaders take children through an experience to connect with nature and learn how to take the first steps toward making your own nature journal. We'll design the cover on a journal that will be provided to you, read "Birdsong" by Julie Flett, make our first entry in our nature journal by comparing two similar nature items, and finally, finding a “sit spot” to practice using our ears to listen to nature and create a "soundscape.” Children will leave this workshop inspired to continue journaling, and with a more refined appreciation for quiet reflection time in nature.

The Benefits of Risky Play For Parents, Educators and Beyond
60 minutes $200

What is this phrase “risky play,” and how does it apply to children and my responsibility as a caregiver? Children’s physical literacy and their ability to take risk assessments themselves is directly linked to their socio-emotional, academic, and gross-motor development. Through risky play children build resilience and perseverance, improve their balance and coordination, fine-tune their own assessment of their limits, and become more effective communicators with improved self-esteem. In this workshop we’ll take a look at all this and more, drawing specific examples from our work at The Folksy House forest site, and give participants a hands-on experiential of their own.

The Wandering Woods
Best for ages 3-12
Up to 15-20 children at a time
$275 for the first 60 minutes, $125 for each additional hour

Let us bring the forest to you! If you’d like your class, school, or group to experience the wonder and awe of building with branches, stepping barefoot into different bumpy or squishy textures, crafting with nature items, playing games that reinforce math and literacy skills and more– this is the workshop for you. We’ll bring the clay, mud, sticks and stones and you provide the space for exploration, building, and engaging hands-on experiences.

Jump Rope Making and Retro Play
Best for ages 5+8-10 children per session
$250 90 minutes

Have you ever seen a jump rope maker in action? We’ll bring our machine which allows children to choose their jump rope colors, sit and crank a handle, and wind up a jump rope that they can play with immediately and then take home! As jump ropes are being made, a Folksy leader will be leading retro skip games, jump rope rhythms, clapping games and more to keep the children active and engaged. For this workshop we require a flat and even ground for the machine to glide over, and a space that’s a minimum of 12’ long by 5’ wide.

Knife Skills for Children 101
Must be at least 4 years old to participate, best for ages 6+10 children max
$200 50 minutes $425 2.5 hour intensive

In this workshop we’ll be teaching children the basics of using a knife and beginning their journey with knife usage. We’ll go over safety precautions in depth including introducing the “blood circle” and “triangle of danger.” Several different carving techniques and body positions will be demonstrated while children begin to carve using blunt materials. Once the child demonstrates the ability to follow directions, demonstrate control, and can show proper knife hold and carving techniques, we will graduate them to a blade.  In the intensive workshop children will try out a variety of materials to carve from soap, soft wood, sticks, and wood blocks. They may go home with a full or partially completed project. Our hopes is that children leave this workshop with confidence around building their knife skills and

Our Folksy Leaders are trained in wilderness first aid and travel with a fully stocked kit in case of a knick or cut. During this workshop we model resilience practices to minor injury, and children form a positive association with persistence to new skill building.
